Jim and Jon will be away for this match, so it will be me, Brian and Bob trying to get things together. Help would be appreciated (-:

We will be using the Palm scoring now that I’ve found the scoring computer (dry and working – yippee!) after my unfortunate house watering incident.

I will be shooting in Cedar City with Drex’s club on Saturday. I plan to arrive there around 0900.  Departure here… TBD.  If folks tag along we generally meet up at St. Helens in Washington for breakfast and then carpool from there.

Sunday:

Sin City in Las Vegas is moving to Palm scoring, and I’ll be attending there to help them have a first successful use.  It will be a 6 stage classifier match only.

Just e-mail or call me if you want to tag along either day. 435 703 2897 or kn@kennelson.com

Quick Report from the Double Tap Match

Category: Match ResultsKen N. @ 7:02 pm

image

Wichita Falls, Tx….   28 degrees, 30+ MPH winds, and freezing rain, hail and snow. Oh… and a thick layer of wet clay mud adding 5 pounds to each shoe.

Hey… let’s go shooting!

Conditions were just above  intolerable. An “experience” for sure.   It should be 50 degrees tomorrow… fingers crossed.   I wish I could say it was “the same for everybody” but those that had Friday squaddings got 70 degrees and sunny.

We probably won’t come back to this one unless they move it to June.   The stages are fun, but 5 years of bad weather in a row makes it tough to risk a 1200 mile drive (-;

As to our shooting… a mixed bag.   When our guns ran, and our fingers held on to magazine during reloads, we shot high 65% to 75% level runs (compared to Max Michel on sunny Friday)  But on a couple stages cold weather gave the guns a bad time and made cleaning magazines impossible.   But that seemed to be the course from GM down to D shooters. Everybody was having fits, but was generally taking it in good cheer.    That said, something like 25% of the shooters dropped out (from anecdotal reports).  Our squad lost more. Some lost none.

6 more stages tomorrow… looking forward to shooting in better conditions. It will, unfortunately, still be muddy.

Update: Sunday was darn cold, but dry.  30 MPH winds continued with 30 degrees temperature.  At stage 11, and 12, it became warm enough to finally shed the coat when you were on-deck.

Word is the match will move to May or June. Good call.

Update II – ALWAYS verify time and hit factor before signing the Palm (or any score sheet).  I would have done a lot better if I’d caught a 937 second error had been caught when it happened, rather than when I was already home and checking results online. 100 stage points lost and a number of positions in the rankings.  )-:

Tip: Setting up Squads on the Palm

Category: TipsKen N. @ 8:57 pm

As many of you know, I hate the way EZWinScore handles squad assignment. Most of you aren’t where you can see the computer screen, but my grimace as I repeatedly try to move shooters around probably sends a clear message.

Fortunately, my squadding torture ends next match.  Rod Cassidy, author of the StageScore scoring software we use on the Palms, told me how to set squads on the Palm. He says his club in Albuquerque never do it in EZWinscore.

Here is how… First, from the main menu:

image
Choose “View Competitors/Squad”

Down in the bottom right of the next screen is a “Move to Squad’, pull it down and pick a squad. Pretty simple (-:

image

So as you take your Palm over to your stage, you just look at who you are shooting with, move them in, and you are good to go. If somebody needs to move squads, just move them. Easy.   And to accommodate late arrivals I will add walkin blank shooters in squad 99 automatically. Just move one in if somebody joins you after shooting has started.

As an aside, Rod is also working on adding backup of each score to an SD card as it is entered. This is a feature I’ve discussed with him over the last few weeks as a means to avoid using thermal printers, or hand written summaries, as backups in case of a Palm disaster.  Printers are hard to find and are expensive, so their need is an investment keeping clubs from using the Palms for scoring.    We should be able to test this feature at our first February match.  As someone who runs a software company, I really appreciate that Rod’s attentiveness to customer requests is a rare treat in the industry.

The nut of it is that, if all goes to plan we will have 12 Palms, with SD card backups, ready to score the Dixie Open in March.   This will mean regular updates on the scoring as the match happens and immediate results when over.  That should make for happy shooters (-:

StageScore Tip: Randomizing shooting order

Category: TipsKen N. @ 8:44 pm

Here is how you can use the Palm scoring software (StageScore) to randomize your shoot order each stage.

After locking the stage you are about to shoot, choose Enter Scores from the main menu. You will see the list of shooters in the squad you are scoring:

image

Now, Click on the arrow next to the word “Sort” and you will get a menu:

image

Choose “Random” and it lists the shooters in a random order:

image

Random is random – the same shooter could shoot first again. If you don’t like the order you get,  pull it down, choose “Name”, and then choose Random again. Repeat until you like the order.

We enjoyed a great turnout and wonderful weather today. Many thanks to all who came, and especially those who helped setup and tear down.

Congratulations to Jeff Bailey who took Overall and Limited. Bob Anderson took Limited 10.

Welcome to new shooters Rob Richards and Micah Evans!

I will not be sending the classifier results in until later this week so as to give time for a few shooters to e-mail me their USPSA numbers.

Thanks to all who helped setup and tear down today.  Perfect weather made today’s match pure shooting joy.  Thanks, as well, to all who learned the Palm today. It sure made getting these results easy.

John Allen, 3 Oct winner, takes on stage 3

Congratulations to John Allen as the Overall Champion.  Limited went nip and tuck between Adam Mann and Ken Nelson. Ken had Adam going into the last stage, and shot it pretty well. But Adam stepped up and went for broke and pulled it off, scoring 40% better than Ken and John Allen.  He took Limited by a hair.

Center of Mass Tactical

COM Holster and Mag Pouch

Brian and I faired well at the Prize Table at the Utah USPSA Championship.

The gun was gone, but we were still early when we went up to the table and were glad to see the gift certificate from Center of Mass Tactical there on the table. We snatched it up.

They make excellent holsters and other accessories, and I needed a new holster for a Commander sized S&W 1911PD I intend to shoot in IDPA.

I e-mailed COM asking questions, and Rick Palmer, the owner, answered them the same evening. Awesome!

So I called and placed an order for one of Rick’s custom Kydex belt holsters and also a custom 1911 dual mag pouch.

COM will be at the Gun show in Vegas next Saturday (Santa Fe Casino) and Rick also said he is going to try and get out to Desert Sportsman and shoot the USPSA match Sunday morning.

If you can’t get to the gun show just visit them online at www.comholsters.com

Thanks, Rick, for running such a customer and result oriented business. And thanks for being one of the sponsors of our state match.

Scorekeeping with the PALM & Stagescore

Category: AnnouncementsKen N. @ 11:09 am

The Palm software has really made scorekeeping a breeze. I can generate match results in just a minute or two on match completion and shooters like seeing their hit factors for comparison as the match is underway.

The next step is to educate shooters so that we can hand them a clipboard with a PALM  on it and they can score as easily as a clipboard with just paper on it.

To help educate our shooters on using the PALM, I made a video showing how to select a stage, pick a shooter, score, and verify the score on the PALM.

You can practice scoring by downloading the StageScore emulator and running it on your own computer.
