No match this Saturday but a trip to Vegas to shoot planned

Category: AnnouncementsKen N. @ 5:34 pm

The range remains closed. I’ve no news on when it will be opened again.  As a reminder when opened it will:

  • have the entrance by the rifle venue
  • be faced approximately opposite (slightly south east) the way it is now
  • have between 9 to 12 bays (tbd) with one 100 yard one and the remainder shorter than we have now. They will be staggered towards the north west.
  • a 600 yard rifle range will be added in behind us.

I will update everybody when the plan is finalized and when dirt moves.  Thanks to those who offered to donate money for fuel. When we need that I’ll post how to do it here.

Also, Brian & I will be heading to Las Vegas to shoot a USPSA match there on Sunday.  If you wish to join us, we have room for 3 more shooters.  Just e-mail kn@kennelson.com or call me (435) 703 2897.  We generally eat Greek or Italian  afterwards at places near the range.

Also note that Brian & I will also be going down next week to shoot 3-Gun on Saturday and IDPA on Sunday.    We are trying to tune up for the Double Tap match later in March.

Range update & Western States Single Stack Video

Category: AnnouncementsKen N. @ 10:14 am

Just a quick update on the range…

Currently we are working up engineering plans to turn the bays around approximately 190 degrees (facing south and east).  We have a plan for 9 bays, but are hoping to revise it for 12 so that we can host larger matches. The entrance will be by the rifle venue. Additionally, a 600 yard range is being added in behind us.

Construction should begin quickly. The plan, currently, is that the county will provide equipment and operators, we and the shooting park will provide fuel.

When I get the final plan from the engineer I’ll post it here.

In the interim, enjoy this video from the Western States Single Stack Championship:

Next match: 20 Feb 2010 – CANCELED

Category: AnnouncementsKen N. @ 2:38 am

Our match this coming Saturday is canceled so that club leadership can focus on rebuilding the Practical Pistol range.  We have engineering plans and approval. On Saturday earth will start moving.

I will post more details about how the range is to be re-configured, and when help might be needed, early this week.

Thanks to all who have sent offers of help both in time and money. We appreciate it very much and will let you know when both will be needed.

Note: Ken & Brian will be making a run to Las Vegas on Sunday 21 Feb. We will have room for 3-4 other shooters for those who want to get their action pistol fix in for the month.
Brian calls “shotgun” but while he may shoot better than us grownups, we hold certain prerogatives and he will ride where we tell him…. (-:

Practical Pistol Range Shut Down Temporarily

Category: AnnouncementsKen N. @ 1:04 pm

UPDATE 12 March 2010:

Once the range drys construction of 12 flipped bays should commence. The plan is 11  shorter bays, and 1  100 yard deep bay (useful for carbine and also hunter safety classes).
A 600 yard range will be put in behind us roughly to the mountain.

Due to concerns over rounds possibly impacting over the far ridge, the Practical Pistol range is closed until it can be reconfigured to shoot the opposite direction.

How long will this last? We don’t know.  We are working on getting equipment to reconfigure the bays another direction. We hope it won’t be long. I will keep you posted.

Can we practice there? No. The range is closed to shooting.

Where will we hold matches? We are working on arrangements to use the Sheriffs range. No final word on that.  And I’ll be arranging car pools to Vegas matches as well.

Have rounds actually hit over there? We don’t know for sure. A homeowner in Coral Canyon complained and showed two rounds of unknown origin found in his yard.

What about the Dixie Open? Since we don’t know if we will have a range, it will have to be canceled.

SUPR Considering Steel Challenge and Field Trip To Las Vegas

Category: AnnouncementsKen N. @ 4:53 pm

image

At our recent club meeting, John Allen asked the club to consider putting on Steel Challenge matches.  There seemed to be a lot of interest in it, so the board put together a committee of Ken Nelson, Jeff Bailey, and Daniel Evans to investigate and report back.

We discussed it with other shooters while at the match, and have also met for a planning lunch this week. We’ve also been pricing steel and have arranged for free cutting from an area professional welder.

Next  up is a field trip to Las Vegas to shoot a Steel Challenge match this Sunday.  We will shoot the match and pick their match director’s brains about our efforts.

Ken & Brian are staying the weekend because Brian is shooting the Shot Show Multi-Gun match on Saturday.

Daniel Evans is driving down Sunday morning. He has room for 3 other shooters.
Coordinate with Daniel (evans.daniel.n@gmail.com) if you want to shoot with us.

If you wish to drive down solo, the match is at Desert Sportsman Range at the western end of Charleston. Go past the Red Rock Casino about 1.5 miles, turn at the sign.

As to what you can shoot… anything you use in USPSA will work.   Brian and I will be shooting in the Rimfire Division, me with a Browning Buckmark and he with a Kimber .22. conversion on his Desert Warrior.

You can learn more about the Steel Challenge by going to www.steelchallenge.com.

Next week we will finish a draft plan and present it to the members for comment. After their comments have been incorporated, we will submit it to the SUPR board for action.

If you have ideas or want to contribute to the effort just e-mail Ken at kn@kennelson.com or call him (435) 703 2897.

Reminder: Cheap sign up for Dixie Open ends this month

Category: AnnouncementsKen N. @ 8:30 pm

Lower cost signup for the Dixie Open ends the last day of January.  It would help us organize the match if we knew how many of our local club members were participating.

The Dixie Open is an 8 stage match requiring 200+ rounds, on 13/14 March.

Here is the signup form

There are at least three ways you can help the match succeed:

  • shoot in it. Have fun.
  • help prepare for it by building props and putting stages up
The biggest needs is for walls for the match. I will post announcements of
upcoming range work opportunities.  The need will be a bit more urgent this
time, because of the match, so if you can come help knock out a few walls it will help
        immensely.
  • work the match
Exact jobs are defined yet, but typical are water runners, help scoring, delivering lunch.
And a million other odds and ends.
Note that you can work the match AND shoot it.

If you read this, and are members of clubs outside of St. George, I’d appreciate it if you would circulate this notice to your e-mail lists and also announce it at your pre-match shooters meetings.
