She has read magazines and magazines (thanks Jon C. !). Endured countless boring discussions with me and Brian. And haunted a few gun shops. And today we set out to try some live fire, in particular, to:

see if a bit more training can get her comfortable with the LCP or PF9. Short answer.. no. In less than 10 shots she developed a flinch that put rounds at the bottom of the stand (much less the target).

see if a 1911 control set could be comfortable. Short answer – yes, but she feels she needs to practice more with it if she would carry it. She loved the way my new Kimber shot, but thought it big for her to carry.

try a .32 ACP Beretta. Generously loaned by a club member and of interest to her because of the caliber – and lack of kick. Alas, one magazine in, her grip got too high, and it bit her hard:

And that gun, while light, and comfortable to carry, was rejected! (As an aside, I did put the new Trauma kit to good use, as the blood was spurting pretty good out of the wound).

The injury stopped our practice session. But the consensus was that a Sig P238 (mini 1911) in .380 is the leading candidate.

Her shooting is improving. Discounting the flinch rounds (stopped after 2), she put 23 rounds in the high A zone, and 4 or 5 in the close C zone. All very damaging shots. From about 7 yards, probably the farthest she would be willing to engage a threat.

Brian wrote this article on custom carry 1911’s.

http://briankevinnelson.com/custom-carry-1911s-662

One described in the article, a customized Kimber 1911, was his Christmas gift to me this year (along with the custom FIFP folder that the entire family got from Maciej for me – awesome!)

He reduced the weight, put in better internal parts, put a crisp 3.5 trigger on it, a front night sight, and installed uber slim grips. It’s a very comfortable carry. It is very accurate as well. When he gets access to a mill he will do some slide cuts to further remove the weight. I actually typically use a Cross Breed holster, but the Milt Sparks Summer Special shown here photographed better.

Anyway, I think those of you interested in 1911’s will enjoy the article.

Background:

I owned this gun a couple years back, and I traded it to Jeff when we bought STI’s as our limited guns. It is sweet shooter. and has an awesome trigger. The mags really do hold 21. I recently used it a couple matches back when Brian left my gun at home and Jeff lent it to me. It ran great.

He loves it, and it was used in the Area 1 and Nationals matches this year, but he is moving to Open Division and is selling it to fund an Akai Custom Open Gun (STI based).

This is a good price for a completely ready to go setup that will be very competitive in Limited Division. I would buy it myself but I just spent a ton replacing the guns stolen at Nationals and outfitting young Brian with custom Cowboy Action guns (pistols, rifle, shotgun).

He will bring it to the match on Saturday if you want to try it out.

My wife recently got her concealed carry permit. She is now trying to decide what to carry. She has tried what I carry, a 1911, a G22, a Ruger LCP, and a Keltec PF9 but didn’t like any of them. The 1911 and G22 were too big, the Keltec kicked too hard, and she literally couldn’t squeeze the LCP trigger (it was too long an action).

So the hunt continues. I recommended a few, but she, being very practical, would like to try before she buys. We have, however, narrowed it down, in that she wants a small, slim, pistol with simple DA trigger that is smooth and relatively short. No 1911 style cocked / locked with safety. .380 or even .22 is fine. While .45 ACP sure puts them down, she thinks .22 to .380 will suffice for her needs.

So I’m asking if any of you have one of these guns that she could try:

DiamondBack .380 ( sort of like a shrunk Glock)

Para LDA Carry in 9mm (okay… this is more for me to try…)

Sig P232 in .380

NAA Guardian in .380 or (.32 NAA – the .32 is a necked down .380 with interesting ballistics)

Walther PPK in .380

Taurus PT-22 (.22)

Beretta Bobcat (.25 acp) or Tomcat (.22)

Or something else that you might recommend.

Anyway, if you have something she should try, please let me know and we can coordinate bringing it to a match, or the range. Thanks!

Oh… and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

In yesterday’s match we used two plate racks – the static plate rack loaned from MGM Targets, and the swinging Polish Plate rack from Farley Collins.

They were graciously loaned for our State match, but wouldn’t they be fun to use in are regular matches as well? And the static one, with a chain to reset it, will be very useful in our new competitor and advanced practices.

We need to raise about $1000 each to keep them here. With steel prices where they are, the vendors have offered us terrific prices (well below suggested retail).

I’ll prime the pump with $500 from the Area 1 match (which will want to use both targets).

And I’ll personally match donations up to $500.

So your help, in any amount, is welcome. We understand times are tough, so no sweat if now isn’t good for you. Any excess funds will be put towards our 20×20 overhead cover on every bay project.

Update – 6 Nov: Current tally… $1550 dollars. Thanks. Keep it coming!
