USPSA Area 1 Results

Category: Match Results, Photos/VideosKen N. @ 8:41 pm

Area 1 is complete.  Jeff did very well – winning Limited A overall. Congrats!  Ken N. had a good Saturday and weak Sunday just missing a 5th place in Limited B and a trophy.   We all then had good luck driving home and getting signed on to the National’s Limited Match wait list, with numbers low enough to be confident we will get a spot on the match.

Area 1 results can be seen here.

Here are videos of Ken N. and Jim M. for your enjoyment. These are stages 1 – 6, 7-12 will be uploaded later.

Report: Rocky Mountain 300

Category: Match ResultsKen N. @ 3:01 pm

Brian and I had an awesome time at the Rocky Mountain 300 this weekend.

The match was very well run, by super friendly and helpful match staff. The other shooters, largely from Colorado and the mid-west, were terrific.  We did run into some northern Utah shooters, including Farley and Inez Collins (who BOTH won guns at the price table!).

The stages were much more than just “hose-fest” 60+ shot stages. They were devious, fiendish things that had you forgetting which way was up by the end.  In the end each was 3 top notch stages with more than 3 times the devilishness.

Just looking at them on paper didn’t do them justice. Once you got on the ground and tried to figure out reload points, or positions where you could see this or that target, the complexity quickly added up until your brow furrowed and then pre-stage thinking time was up and you had to shoot it.   And unlike most stages, fatigue played a role.  You were breathing hard and your arms were like lead at the end of most stages.   And heaven forbid if you had any makeup shots and had to re-think reloads and positions on the fly.  Tough, but very fun.

It turned out that my Glock, with a lightened striker spring, really didn’t like the magnum pistol primers Brian used for this batch of match ammo.  So I had about 40 duds (and lots of comments about my new “5th” generation bolt action Glock) – lesson learned.

I also learned to bring extra mag pouches. One of mine ripped of my belt after getting caught in the start chair. It was ruined, and I had to haul mags around in my pocket, or tucked in my belt.

Brian did well, finishing in the top half of shooters. He missed top Junior shooter by screwing up the last 2 seconds of the last stage (50 penalty points in 2 seconds!). Lesson learned, as well…

This is a match we are putting on our “do again” list.  It was fun. The people were cool, and the prize table quite impressive (as well as cash payback for division placers).

I will post video of Brian shooting the stages tonight or tomorrow.

It was a tight match – Jeff Bailey got Jim Meade by less than 1%.
Congratulations to Chip Hartman – only his 3rd match and he finishes
third at 75%. Well done!

Cedar City .22 Steel Results

Category: Match ResultsKen N. @ 6:43 pm

Here are the results for the Iron County Action Shooters .22 steel match last Saturday.  They should have their own site up at ironcountyactionshooters.com by end of week, and I’ll post it there as well.

It was pretty fun. They combined some Steel Challenge stages (Smoke & Hope and Double Tap) with home grown ones to good effect.  The quality of the targets they’ve built is terrific – well done Chuck and Jim.

We had a total of 20 people show up to shoot, 2 had to leave before they shot (work obligations) and 3 had to leave before they completed their course of fire because of family commitments. Our apologies to those that did not shoot and those who had to leave early, hopefully by shooting in squads we will get more shooters through faster.

16 shooters turned out in great weather with 6 challenging classifier stages.   It seemed to be Brian Nelson’s first chance for an overall win. And he didn’t lose it by shooting bad, instead Bryan Mortensen took it with blistering run on the last stage we shot (# 1).

Thanks to all who attended. And a special thanks to those who kicked in a little extra at registration for fuel money to rebuild the range!

IDPA classifier

Category: Match Results, TrainingKen N. @ 8:14 am

Brian and I started practical pistol shooting with the IDPA in Las Vegas. And we continue to shoot there once a month. This month was a Classifier match.  The IDPA uses a 3 stages, and just 3 targets, to classify shooters. Their classifier is deceptively simple but devishly tough.

image

IDPA uses time-plus scoring. Their targets have  0, –1, –3 points areas. A “miss” is –5. These are points. You shoot the course of fire, then add up your points down * .5 and add that many seconds.  The classifier uses 90 shots and tests the core of IDPA shooting, including weak and strong hand, shooting from cover, and of course the controversial “tactical reload”.

I shoot a Glock 34 in their Stock Service Pistol Division. He shot a Canyon Creek customized XD Tactical in their Enhanced Service Pistol Division. Here are the breakouts of times needed and rankings:

image

My goal was < 1 second per shot hard time (90 seconds), and no –3’s or misses.   Alas, I scored 111 seconds with about 13 penalty seconds.  Brian got 117 seconds, but with substantially more penalty seconds due to misses early in the strings.

I was in the middle of Expert. And Brian in the middle of Sharpshooter.  ESP is a tough division, as it is mostly made of people shooting custom 9mm 1911’s with very low power factors (125).  If Brian wants to compete there we will have to reload or buy 9mm with a softer punch.

Brian actually shot at the high Expert level after the first 3 strings, but he so botched those (missing 3 head shots) that Expert was out of reach by the 10th shot of the 90 shot classifier.

As to me… I trained at the IDPA Master level and expected to make it easily. BUT… it took an inexplicable 7 seconds to get my first weak hand shot off on one string, and I’d practiced Bianchi barricade 30 yard shots, but was presented with a stacked barrel barricade instead. They require different positions and movement (not just leaning) and I didn’t adjust and had a very awkward stance with resulting penalties.

Oh well…. c’est le guerre!

We will put this practice to test at the IDPA Arizona State Championship at the end of the month in lovely Tuscon, AZ.
