Utah Shooting Sports Council URGENT ACTION ALERT 2/24/09
Immediate action required- GUN RIGHTS THREATENED!
PLEASE FORWARD THIS ALERT TO EVERYONE INTERESTED IN UTAH FIREARMS ISSUES.
***************
— Stop the permit fee meddling!
***************
STOP THE PERMIT FEE MEDDLING
Senate Bill 227, by chronically anti-gun Sen. Scott McCoy, meddles
with Concealed Weapons Permit fees. It would make a large
increase in non-resident permit application and renewal fees.
This bill RAISES Utah Resident permit fees even though the initial
cost is reduced slightly, but raising renewals.
What they don’t tell you is that at the end of 2008 the state had
a SURPLUS of $261,814 in the account for processing permits!
They do NOT need more money to do their job.
There are some clever word changes hidden in the bill that
turns permit fees into a slush fund for the Utah Highway Patrol.
This bill is on the agenda for Senate Judiciary, Law Enforcement,
and Criminal Justice Committee – TOMORROW- Wednesday,
25 February 2009, at 4:10 PM in Senate room 250.
ACTION REQUIRED
ASK the Committee members to VOTE AGAINST SB 227
(Concealed Firearm Permit Fees Amendments)
Please email, fax or call IMMEDIATELY, or before 3:00 PM
on Wednesday because they will be meeting tomorrow afternoon!

Dry Fire Exercises – the Kata of IPSC Shooting
Here is an easy daily regimen that will help build familiarity, repeatability and stamina into your shooting. Try to do your dryfire practice during the same general time of the day as you usually compete. Make sure that the gun is unloaded and there is no ammunition in your dryfire area!
Draws:
Hands At Sides
10 Solid warm-up
10 Fastest/Smoothest possible
10 Solid
Surrender (hands above shoulders)
10 Solid warm-up
10 Fastest/Smoothest possible
10 Solid
Misc. work
10 Draws to Kneeling
10 Draws to prone
5 Draws moving to a position
5 Draws off a table
5 Strong hand draws
5 Weak hand draws
Reloads off belt starting with gun out and on target:
10 Solid warm-up

10 Fastest/Smoothest possible
10 Solid
5 from standing to kneeling
5 from kneeling to prone
5 from standing to prone
50 Target Transitions on either miniature IPSC targets or the transition dots in the Practical Shooting Manual.
Find your weak areas (anything that you screw up often
and increase repetitions until the problem is worked out. Make sure at the end of every draw and reload, you have a perfect sight picture. Do not "pop" the gun up and down, force a follow through of a couple of seconds on target everytime.
Until next time DVC!!

Ken adds: Brian & I also practice our strong hand and weak hand holds. This is especially useful for the IDPA Classifier, which has a strong and weak hand component. Lacking any online or other information on this, we just hold for 20 second count, then squeeze a dry fire shot and call the shot. Repeat 10 good times. The goal is to build weak arm strength and to learn to isolate the weak hand trigger finger.
This was the only video we took that came out. The one Brian took of me was an excellent study of the scorer’s back )-: I’ll work on video lessons for him…
Brian & I both had issues with our factory reloaded ammo this match. The quality really varied and some rounds hit the pepper poppers clean but didn’t knock them over. That + frequent jams made it a tough Saturday, but a good lesson learned.
If you want to post videos here, just e-mail me for access information. Or arrange to exchange a memory card or CD-ROM and I can upload them. I’m happy to do it.
Hope to have one of those hat cams next match…
Shooters:
We had a great match Saturday Feb. 21. We had 25 shooters, which made 3 squads. Everyone seemed to have fun and the match went well. Bob will have the scores out soon so watch for his email. Ken will put the scores and the next match stages on the web site www.southernutahpistol.com Check the web site for club info , videos and pictures of the match.
If anyone has ideas for stages, we want to know. Draw out a sketch with some stage instructions and we will put it into a match. Please bring the diagram to the previous match. All stages that we shoot must be built according to USPSA rules. We can make about anything work.

Matt Burkett, Grand Master, and IDPA and 3-gun Champion has an information packed website. But the coolest feature is a page of dry fire drills that you can do at your computer.
To try them visit http://www.mattburkett.com/flashfiles/dryfire.html
Draw and mag change drill, right on your computer.
Other drills include Target Transition Training, Swinger Training, and Mover Training.
Thanks Matt!

Some nifty USPSA oriented shirts can be found at this link:
http://shop.cafepress.com/uspsa
CafePress is a neat “make it yourself” online shirt shop. Use designs others have put up, or make your own and upload it. I’ve done it a few times before for band shirts and shirts for company parties. A bit pricey but the customizability and ability to do short runs is nice.
The IDPA section has some interesting ones too:
