Range update & Western States Single Stack Video

Category: AnnouncementsKen N. @ 10:14 am

Just a quick update on the range…

Currently we are working up engineering plans to turn the bays around approximately 190 degrees (facing south and east).  We have a plan for 9 bays, but are hoping to revise it for 12 so that we can host larger matches. The entrance will be by the rifle venue. Additionally, a 600 yard range is being added in behind us.

Construction should begin quickly. The plan, currently, is that the county will provide equipment and operators, we and the shooting park will provide fuel.

When I get the final plan from the engineer I’ll post it here.

In the interim, enjoy this video from the Western States Single Stack Championship:

Next match: 20 Feb 2010 – CANCELED

Category: AnnouncementsKen N. @ 2:38 am

Our match this coming Saturday is canceled so that club leadership can focus on rebuilding the Practical Pistol range.  We have engineering plans and approval. On Saturday earth will start moving.

I will post more details about how the range is to be re-configured, and when help might be needed, early this week.

Thanks to all who have sent offers of help both in time and money. We appreciate it very much and will let you know when both will be needed.

Note: Ken & Brian will be making a run to Las Vegas on Sunday 21 Feb. We will have room for 3-4 other shooters for those who want to get their action pistol fix in for the month.
Brian calls “shotgun” but while he may shoot better than us grownups, we hold certain prerogatives and he will ride where we tell him…. (-:

Take it easy on creaky old Dad

The student becomes the master…

I knew it had to happen sometime. I just didn’t quite expect it so soon.  My son smacked me down. Sat on me. Owned me. In pistol shooting… that is.

In the past, he had beat me once ,by a very small percentage and only when I’d had severe jamming of my pistol.

But at yesterday’s IDPA match, he started with an early 1st stage smack down, and then turned on the heat. He finished 4th overall (of 36 shooters) , with 116 seconds, I in the middle of the pack with 157 seconds. His score was within 1.5 seconds of 2nd place.   I would have had top ten if I had not had a lot of jams on the 5th and 6th stages, but even if the gun had run, I wasn’t in his league on that day.

Which pleases me (-;

This match didn’t have a lot of movement. I can still move better than him, but in stages stressing shooting and gun handling – he has an edge…. for now.

Oh… and he’s just 12.

Practical Pistol Range Shut Down Temporarily

Category: AnnouncementsKen N. @ 1:04 pm

image

Due to concerns over rounds possibly impacting over the far ridge, the Practical Pistol range is closed until it can be reconfigured to shoot the opposite direction.

How long will this last? We don’t know.  We are working on getting equipment to reconfigure the bays another direction. We hope it won’t be long. I will keep you posted.

Can we practice there? No. The range is closed to shooting.

Where will we hold matches? We are working on arrangements to use the Sheriffs range. No final word on that.  And I’ll be arranging car pools to Vegas matches as well.

Have rounds actually hit over there? We don’t know for sure. A homeowner in Coral Canyon complained and showed two rounds of unknown origin found in his yard.

What about the Dixie Open? Since we don’t know if we will have a range, it will have to be canceled.

UPDATE 25 Feb 2010:

We hope to start rebuilding very soon. We have a plan that flips the bays around and also adds in a 600 yard range.  The county will provide equipment and operates, we provide fuel.

Match Results: 6 Feb 2010

With the weather foreboding,  21 fearless shooters showed up.  It would have been more, as some from Vegas were coming up, but with the rain coming down hard at 0600, I texted them to not risk the long trip.  About 4 or 5 new shooters that had indicated this would be their first match, decided to try it for the first time in better weather.  We also had two observers today that intend to shoot with us at the next match.

Tim Tucker shot with us today, so the race was on for 2nd place (-;  But it was nice to have him back, and also to have the Cox family shooting with us again.  New shooters, from up north, were Phillip Vollmer,  Tom Tuft, and Todd Griffiths.  Also, making his first appearance as a permanent resident of St. George, was Bryan Mortenson. Welcome Bryan!

Okay… to the match.   Tim almost cleaned the stages, but a mike on the house stage opened the door for Jeff and he stepped right through it.   Richard Hirschi had an unfortunate DQ on the first stage (shirt got in the way as he holstered and the pistol fell out), but he took it in good spirits and helped the rest of the match.  Brian Nelson’s belt fell off and dragged along behind him, but he still managed a 3rd place finish on the stage – that’s focus!  The weather held on with a spritz of rain here and there, and not until we had parked the trailer at the cleanup did it really start coming down. Thank you Mother Nature!

If you have any comments on the stages today, please e-mail me.   Four of them are for the Dixie Open and if you saw anything that might be a problem, let us know.  I’ll forward your comments to Jim & Jon.

Movement + Wild Stage Ideas

Category: Tips, TrainingKen N. @ 11:46 am

Brian is working on movement now in his training. It turns out small steps are faster than big steps, usually, in our sport.  Speed from target to target is the time to leave one spot, move to another, and shoot.  Smaller steps work better because you arrive ready to shoot.  The trade in speed covering the distance (small) is more than offset by being ready to shoot when you get where you going.

To show this in video form, we’ve been looking at top shooters on You Tube. They all move in quick, cat like steps, unless the running stretch is quite long.  What you could cover in 3 steps, they take 5 or 6, and keep their bodies and guns largely in the athletic shooting position. Thus, when they arrive, they simply extend (or press) to the target and bang!

Timing it out last evening in practice, it is quite a bit faster.  It is quite counter-intuitive until you break the steps down and actually time it.

While looking at videos these “fun” stages came up. They show Dave Sevigny working through obstacles and on a platform.  Note that on the platform his movements are much like on terra firma.  Anyway, these looked fun to me. Let us know if you think we should try something similar. (=:
