Match Results: 17 March 2012

Sorry for the slow response. Not only was I not able to attend the match, I wasn’t really up for doing any computer work either this weekend.

First off, thanks to Adam and Charlie for designing what I’m told were super fun stages. I’m sorry to have missed them.

Congrats to Brian Nelson, for taking the Overall Spot, and Jeff Bailey and Adam Mann for 2nd and 3rd.

Reminder: GOP Caucus tonight

I was remiss in not reminding you about the Democratic caucus Tue night.   Sorry.   I’d assumed they were the same night.

Anyway, one of our missions is promoting the 2nd Amendment and gun rights.  And the BEST way you can help us do that is to attend the caucus tonight and make sure you support candidates that are strong on the 2nd Amendment, Concealed Carry and other gun rights issues.

You can find your caucus location at http://utgop.org/

Match setup–Wed 0900

Adam and Charlie called today saying they would like to build the match and design the stages as well.

I told them – you bet.  I’ll post the round count later in the week, but the stages will be a mystery until you get there.  Their goal… if we got it, use it.    This might be our last match til Area 1, so we want to have a great one!    Charlie and Adam have built great stages in the past and I’m sure we will be in for a fun time.

They will be at the range at 0900 on Wed morning.  If you can assist, they welcome it.  I’ll try to drop by then, my work schedule permitting.

This will let us have a nice solid practice / class on Friday – so we do appreciate them stepping up.

Help Wanted: Match Setup–$50 and free match

Jim, who normally sets up the matches, can’t this week.

The last couple matches  we’ve setup on Friday before and that hit our practice / competition classes.  So I’d prefer if this match is setup Wed or Thu.     Setup normally takes 2 to 3 hours, if diligent.   Targets are stapled the morning of the match.

RSVP to me if you are interested.  kn@kennelson.com

New Range Rule Regarding Shooting Down Center of Bays 1-10

Range Master Jim and I have been discussing the safety of shooting down the central road between bays 1-10 over the last couple weeks.

We’ve decided to NOT permit it.

Reasons:

- we have a new access road past Bay 11.
Nothing is there to keep people from entering the shooting area

- it is a 200 yard shot. Short rounds, from 75 to 150 yards, could easily skim/skip over the berm at the other end.

We have built a 100 yard bay out front. Use it for longer shots, or sighting in carbines/rifles.  For longer than that, the R/P venue, or the desert, remain available.

We will be meeting, as a board, to define new rules, and modify existing rules, in light of our new range build. I will post them once decided.

Our New Range

Those of you who shot the match today saw a much different range than at our last match.   We’ve put our NRA Grant money to great use.  And we’ve had some help, big help, but I can’t announce who it was as they prefer to remain anonymous.

Here is a picture of the new range. Click on the picture to see it quite large.  Explanations of the red # annotations follow the picture below.

Summary:

We now have 23 bays + a gully run.  One bay is 100 yards long. Another 75 yards. The rest are roughly 35 to 50 yards of shooting space.

1. The main interior section of the range. Bays 1 – 10 oppose each other making for easy squad transition between stages.

2. A 75 yard by 75 yard bay. The back of it will have a large tent during the area match.  Longer term we will have a 30×60 building where the tent will be.

3. Parking lot.

4. New front bays. 6 80′x80 bays, 2 80×60, and 1 100 yardx60 bay.

5. 100×60 bay

6. Road connecting to Rifle/Pistol Venue.

7. Road connecting to interior bays This makes for easy circuit of squads in larger matches.

8.  3 bays not shown, equipment yard, and gully run.

9.  Chrono bay

Permanent improvements remaining before Area 1 include building a shoot house on #5 (middle of interior bays), pebbling the road and parking area, and erection of a 40×80 pole tent.

We welcomed Caden Bowler for his first match. He did terrific.  Caden is 14 and has excellent shooting skills. When he gets the competition part worked out he will be giving us a run for his money.  BTW: With Caden joining us, I’m pretty sure we have the among most active junior participation of any club in the country.  And I say… keep them coming!   From personal experience I can tell you that strapping on guns and running with my son is WAY better than watching him play soccer from the stands.  Pass it on!

New to us, but not to the sport, was Dave Boshard, out of Provo.  He is a GM who put his guns up 6 years ago, and didn’t pull the trigger on them until Stage 1 of today.  Then he found out that the C-MORE battery doesn’t last 10 years…. (-:  Welcome Dave!  I could see from the gleem in his eye that the bug might have caught him again.

Dave’s situation – where he zeroed a stage because of a 10 year old battery brings up an issue I’d like to handle at our next match.   That is the issue of re-shoots for severe equipment failure.  We also had a squib, and a gun part break causing it to be single action.   There are a few ways to go on it, my main interest is that we decide and apply it equivalently.    I’ll budget a bit of time in the next shooters meeting for discussion of it.  My own priorities are ensuring safety, fun and competition while recognizing proper maintenance of equipment is part of the game.

The R/P venue reported a skip over into their parking lot. We don’t know which stage, or how it happened.   All our targets were set for impact into the berm, not deck, so it might have been a rock.   This does highlight, though, that we want to ensure ALL our targets have impact into the berms, or if not then within 3 to 5 feet so any skips are taken by the berm.   That includes stages and any practice/training scenarios.
